Andrew T. Coates is a lecturer in the Department of Religious Studies at Duke University and managing editor of Material Religion: The Journal of Objects, Art, and Belief. Coates is a scholar of religion and material culture in the United States. His research focuses on technologies of the body and sensation in early twentieth-century Protestantism. His first book, What is Protestant Art? (Brill, 2018) offered an overview of the study of Protestant visual culture.

Coates teaches classes on religion and film, religions in the Americas, religious studies theory, and atheism.
