Andrew T. Coates is a scholar of religion and material culture in the United States. His research focuses on technologies of the body and sensation in the early twentieth century. His first book, What is Protestant Art?  (Brill, 2018) offered an overview of the study of Protestant visual culture. Since 2020, he has been the managing editor of the journal Material Religion: The Journal of Objects, Art, and Belief. 
He teaches classes on religion and film, religions in the Americas, religious studies theory, and atheism.
