David Michael Gallagher
Associate Professor of Medicine

As Chief of Hospital Medicine programs at Duke University Health System (DUHS), my primary responsibility is the leadership of a team of physicians and administrative leaders that positively impact the strategies, goals, and objectives of Hospital Medicine at our three hospitals. I am responsible for oversight of various programs that focus on excellence and innovation in clinical care, patient safety and quality, clinical education, and academics. I report to the DUHS Chief Medical Officer and General Internal Medicine (GIM) Division Chief. Our Hospital Medicine Section is an essential component of the academic division of General Internal Medicine.  Our programs have 200+ hospital medicine physicians,  Advanced Practice Providers,  Clinical Leaders, and administrative staff.

I have been at Duke since 2006 and currently am an Associate Professor of Medicine, Associate Chief Medical Officer for Duke University Hospital, and Clinical Consultant for Duke Central Automated Laboratory. My faculty career track is as a Clinician Leader – Administrator with an emphasis on Clinical Practice Advancement. As a clinically active hospitalist, I actively teach learners as an attending physician for Duke Hospital General Medicine Teaching Services caring for patients at DUH and other venues. I am board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine with a Focused Practice in Hospital Medicine, current in that board’s Maintenance of Certification Program, and have achieved the designation and recognition as a Senior Fellow in Hospital Medicine through the Society of Hospital Medicine. The themes of my scholarly output include readmissions reduction, venous thromboembolism risk in hospitalized older adults, physical activity in hospitalized older adults, mentorship programs for hospitalists, quality improvement teaching to residents, and hospitalist workflow improvements.
