Advising & Mentoring
I have mentored students at Duke and other universities (undergraduate, graduate and medical) and also a number of junior faculty at Duke and at other institutions. My mentoring approach is to sensitize the people mentored to the context in which they study and work – scientifically, technologically, medically and socially – so that they can pursue toolboxes appropriate for their career goals and contributions to science and society. Students I have mentored now work have faculty and postdoctoral positions in universities and med schools, positions in industry, government agencies, NGOs, and in the private practice of medicine. Faculty I have mentored have uniformly progressed to tenure and now full professorships at a number of universities including Johns Hopkins, Northwestern University, the University of Washington, and Brown University, as well as Duke.
