Overview


Elena Kostyuchenko is a Russian journalist, writer, and Visiting Scholar in the Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies at Duke University (2025–2026).

She is the author of I Love Russia (Penguin Press, 2023), translated into multiple languages, and numerous long-form investigations and reportages on war, repression, and marginalized communities in Russia. A long-time investigative reporter for Novaya Gazeta, she is known for her coverage of corruption, LGBTQ rights, environmental issues, and the war in Ukraine.

Her work has been recognized with international honors, including European Press Prize and Gerd Bucerius Prize for Free Press in Eastern Europe, and has been widely published and translated.
