I'm currently working on a dissertation examining the relationship between Paul and Luke's theology. Ever since Philipp Vielhauer's 1950 essay arguing that Luke and Paul were worlds apart theologically, it has been common for scholars to argue, or at least admit, that Luke had little understanding of Paul's theology. My project aims to put this consensus opinion to the test by re-examining Paul and Luke on the loci Vielhauer investigated: natural theology, Law, Christology, and eschatology. By a more comprehensive analysis of Luke and Paul's views on these four topics, as well as a more nuanced comparison of Luke and Paul by reference to the views of other early Christians, I show that Luke and Paul belong more closely together than Vielhauer and others have thought and that the theological relationships between early Christians should be rethought along the lines of family resemblances/differences: Luke and Paul have differences in theological outlook, but if they "look" more like each other than they do other early Christians, it is necessary to name the relation, attending both to their distinctives and their overlaps.
