Overview

My current research interests lie in the areas of pediatric regional anesthesia and education. Although much progress has been made during the past 20 years in the treatment of post-operative pain in children, pain continues to be under-treated in many settings. The use of regional anesthetic techniques such as caudal or epidural anesthesia have been shown to provide excellent pain relief in children and to reduce the stress response associated with surgical procedures. Beyond these central methods of analgesia and intravenous narcotics, little else has been extensively studied in children. For example, the uses of peripheral nerve blockade (including continuous infusion techniques) or nerve plexus blockade have not been fully investigated. I am interested in studying regional blockade in infants and children in order to improve the overall pain control for surgical procedures and to utilize regional techniques effectively employed in adults in the pediatric population. I am also interested in methods of teaching of these techniques and studying the effectiveness of different teaching methods for resident education.
