Applying deep research, precise editing, and fine-tuned humor to a combination of her own cinematography and found footage, Shambhavi Kaul depicts landscapes and figures that exist between imagination and reality. Her work uses cultural tropes from places like Hong Kong, India, and Mexico to reveal the ambiguous meanings behind loaded popular signifiers. Kaul presents a selection of her films, including new work, followed by a conversation.

Shambhavi Kaul (in person)
The final event in the series combines films and live readings by Indian-born artist-filmmaker Shambhavi Kaul. Constructed from found films, television and her own filming, Kaul combines different textures of moving image materials and temporal strategies to create familiar yet unlocatable sensations of place. Ostensibly landscape films, her work raises questions about where we are and where we come from – both culturally and geographically.

Artist Shambhavi Kaul premiered her latest video installation, Modes of Faltering, at the UT Downtown Gallery as part of a special exhibition in collaboration with the Big Ears music festival. Kaul's work has been exhibited in galleries and on the film festival circuit, including the Toronto International Film Festival, the Berlinale, the New York Film Festival, the London Film Festival, Rotterdam, the Edinburga International Film Festival, Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen, the Ann Arbor Film Festival, and the Shanghai Bienniale.
