Knee osteoarthritis is more than a 'wear and tear' disease, affecting approximately 16% of people over the age of 15. Unfortunately, aging is one of the primary risk factors for developing osteoarthritis and thus much of our elderly population suffer from this disease. As this disabling disease includes a hallmark of articular cartilage degeneration, I am currently investigating differential age-related responses to growth factors in cartilage that may reveal an age-related mechanism of osteoarthritis development.
