Hesiod and the Disgraceful Shepherds: Pastoral Politics in a Panhellenic Dichterweihe?

Publication ,  Chapter

I seek to motivate the indiscriminate abuse ("ignoble disgraces, mere bellies") to which the Muses at Hesiod's Dichterweihe subject all "field-dwelling shepherds" with reference to the pastoral politics of the Greek mainland in the archaic and classical periods. I draw attention to the Panhellenic dimensions of Hesiod's induction as an epic rhapsode.
