Avascular necrosis (AVN) can result in significant morbidity. Previous studies suggest that AVN is associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and corticosteroid treatment. Hypovitaminosis D has been postulated to play a role in bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis of the jaw. Using frozen serum and demographic data from the Atherosclerosis Prevention in Pediatric Lupus Erythematosus (APPLE) trial, we conducted an exploratory analysis to assess associations between AVN and demographics, SLE disease activity and vitamin D deficiency, defined as serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] <20 ng/mL.
