Presentation of Case A 15-year-old girl was admitted to the hospital because of hepatitis. Ten months previously her ears had been pierced by a physician. At about that time a classmate contracted hepatitis. One month later jaundice developed insidiously, with the passage of dark urine and light stools, although she felt well except for fatigue. One week of bed rest was followed by transient improvement. Nausea, fever and cold sweats developed abruptly, and she was admitted to another hospital, where she remained for 29 days. On admission the bilirubin was 20.8 mg, total, and 14 mg, direct, per 100 ml;. © 1970, Massachusetts Medical Society. All rights reserved.
