This paper presents a new analytic model for the performance and reliability of safety-related message broadcast in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) at intersections with non-homogeneous Poisson process (NHPP) for more general road traffic and node distributions. The new analytic model adopts semi-Markov processes (SMP) interacting with M/G/1 queues to characterize the IEEE 802.11p channel behavior of safety message broadcast. Then, the analytic model is applied to derive the MAC-level quality of service (QoS) metrics for safety applications at intersections taking into account impact of hidden terminal problem, Nakagami fading with path loss, and concurrent transmissions from different vehicles. The numerical results under various network parameters are cross validated with NS2 simulations. New observations and conclusions are given.
