Parental involvement in the development process of the sporting career among former athletes of the rhythmic gymnastics Brazilian team: building a theoretical model
This study aimed to develop a theoretical model of parental involvement in the sporting career among Rhythmic Gymnastics athletes and analyze the attributes that lead to sports self‐realization. 15 former gymnasts and 20 parents answered a retrospective semi structured interview. Inductive analysis using idiographic profile was performed. Both parents have shown emotional and financial support, however, mothers tend to provide daily and ongoing support while fathers act more through financial and material support. Former athletes emphasized that physical, motor and psychological aspects contributed to achieving high performance. Family involvement and personal attributes of the athlete have been shown to be determinants of self‐realization.
