This article provides a brief review of research on religion and health and suggested clinical applications. Most of the research reviewed was published between 1960 and 2010 and is based on a systematic review, although more selected recent research has also been included. The majority of the research summarized here indicates that religious involvement is related to better mental health, social health, health behaviors, and physical health overall. We examine here why this might be the case, and then make recommendations on what health professionals should do differently based on these research findings.
