Two-dimensional (2-D) nanomaterials provide opportunities for a wide range of applications. In order to harness their usefulness, understanding and controlling the interface between 2-D crystals and other materials is of paramount importance. For electronic device applications, large contact resistance and difficulty integrating high-quality dielectrics are the most pressing challenges. In this review, we describe the progress and core challenges of various contact and gate engineering approaches in order to guide the direction of future research toward fabricating useful devices based on 2-D nanomaterials.
