Integrating Preexposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Into a Network of Community Health Centers
Although preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is more than 92% effective in preventing human immunodeficiency virus, primary care providers underprescribe it. This quality improvement project was designed to increase the provision of PrEP to people at high risk for human immunodeficiency virus via evidence-based training given to primary care providers. This training occurred within a network of 19 federally qualified health centers in Sacramento, California. After implementation, there was a 67% increase in prescriptions for PrEP. Furthermore, all providers displayed an increase in acquired knowledge of PrEP (P < .001). Via focus group, providers identified facilitators, barriers, and innovative ideas for the standardization of PrEP in primary care.
