The lower-bound and upper-bound transonic Mach numbers based upon metrics of efficiency are discussed using the concepts of temperature change and entropy change. For air, the Mach numbers from 0.845 to 1.205 are suggested as the transonic boundaries. Next, an approach to determine the most efficient supersonic Mach number is proposed for a 2-dimensional wedge and a 3-dimensional cone. The most efficient supersonic Mach number is that with the smallest shock-wave-drag and the highest aerodynamic efficiency. This concept of the most efficient supersonic Mach number may be useful for conceptual design of a highly efficient supersonic aircraft.
