This chapter considers the challenges for managers and engineers in addressing the wastes generated from coal-fired power plants. The wastes are produced at every stage, from mining and burning the coal, to dealing with ash and other wastes generated by these processes. The chapter describes coal combustion, coal combustion residuals (CCRs) storage and handling, and mining wastes according to the environmental and public health insults expected from each phase.
