Municipal solid waste must be collected in efficient and environmentally sound ways. This chapter describes the waste materials that are collected, the collection systems that are typically used, and the types of vehicles and other equipment used. Vehicle routing and scheduling is discussed in terms of its capabilities, limitations, data requirements. The chapter concludes with case study examples from around the world.
