The maternal-placental-fetal unit undergoes complex hormonal changes throughout pregnancy. Placental hormones dramatically adapt the endocrine physiology of the maternal host and lead to alterations in thyroid function, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis physiology, and glucose metabolism. Aberrations in this normal process or underlying maternal comorbidities can result in maternal or fetal endocrine diseases. Understanding normal endocrine changes of pregnancy and addressing maladaptions in physiology through prenatal care are essential to optimizing maternal and fetal outcomes.
