In a multi-modal wireless sensor network, sensors of different modalities (or types) cluster together to accomplish the tasks of sensing, fusion, and management of cluster resources and to meet the application goals. A distributed sensor network consists of a large number of low-cost sensor nodes that are networked together for observing events that are localized in space and time and for fusing their data. Intuitively, it may be argued that the sensor fusion quality is proportional to the number of sensors that provide information-bearing.
