The porpoises consist of seven extant species in the family Phocoenidae, and representatives of the family occur in both hemispheres in pelagic, coastal, and riverine habitats. Porpoises are among the smallest cetaceans and represent an interesting evolutionary experiment within the Delphinoid lineage.
