Diagnostic Subtalar Arthroscopy: Posterior Approach
Since it was first published by Van Dijk et al in 2000, the posterior subtalar (ST) approach has gained in popularity for the management of the posterior ST joint and surrounding structures.1-9 Current literature supports a posterior arthroscopic approach to the ST joint with regard to its increased visualization area, 10 low surgical morbidity and risk of complications, and, as a result, quicker recovery time.11, 12 Although the ST joint can be entered from a lateral approach and there are circumstances when such an approach may be advantageous, this chapter will focus on the diagnostic posterior ST arthroscopy in the prone position. Although posterior ST arthroscopy is still a relatively new procedure, recent literature has shown that it can be an important and valuable tool in the surgeon’s armamentarium to safely and effectively treat debilitating and common problems of the hindfoot. This chapter will discuss the indications, describe the senior author’s preferred method of the procedure and protocols, and discuss how to minimize any potential complications.
