Nail surgery is required in a number of situations: in order to make a diagnosis via biopsy; to definitively remove a lesion; or to relieve pain such as in ingrown toenail surgery, removal of a foreign body or evacuation of a hematoma. Nail surgery in children and adolescents requires a number of special considerations, both in pathologic diagnoses as well as in the performance of the procedure itself. Nail anatomy, pre-operative preparation, full and partial nail avulsion methods as well as biopsy and excision techniques, and post-operative care are covered.
