The use of alternative medicines such as minerals, vitamins, and herbal products has increased dramatically in recent years. Reasons for such an increase in prevalence include anecdotal reports on efficacy, impressive advertisement, lower cost of products compared to prescription medications, and ease of attainment of the supplements. Regardless of the reasons, it is important that physicians, particularly the pain practitioner be cognizant of the effects of these agents, whether beneficial or harmful. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
