This chapter considers how hazardous wastes can adversely affect the environment. Public health and ecosystems are threatened when the constituents of hazardous wastes are released into the environment. The chapter describes the science that underpins environmental quality, and the environmental laws that directly or indirectly control and regulate the manufacture, use, storage, transport, and disposal of hazardous wastes. Trends in recent decades and estimates of the volume and types of wastes are discussed, along with possible means of ameliorating the amount, exposure, and environmental risks.
