Lesbians pursuing parenthood: pathways, challenges, and best practices

Publication ,  Chapter
Hayes, M; Woodward, JT
January 1, 2021

Lesbians are pursuing parenthood in greater numbers than ever, but their family-building journey is significantly more challenging than it is for heterosexual couples. Extensive research has debunked the myth that children raised in lesbian families show higher rates of psychopathology or difficulty with adjustment. Despite this, lesbians pursuing parenthood still face overt and subtle discrimination in society generally and in healthcare specifically. They must engage in a multifaceted decision-making process, navigate a more complex logistical process, and cope with greater financial expense. The aim of this chapter is to outline the unique experiences and needs of lesbians becoming parents, identify barriers to care, and highlight strategies to address them.
