Biogeochemistry considers the reservoirs and cycles of substances within and among the earth’s spheres, including the lithosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, and hydrosphere. Biogeochemical cycling of global greenhouse gases is ongoing and continuous, which means that a systems approach must be taken to understand the sources and to predict climate change. This chapter introduces the dynamics, both thermodynamics and fluid dynamics, associated with biogeochemical cycling and pollutant partitioning. The carbon cycle is presented as a case for a biogeochemical underpinning of a systems approach to climate change.
