This chapter explains the processes that diminish water quality and the means by which water may be treated to improve its quality. This includes both treating water that has been polluted by human activities, as well as treating water to ensure that it meets standards for use, especially drinking water standards. Examples of treatment processes are discussed with respect to removing various pollutions, including primary, secondary, and advanced wastewater treatment approaches, remediating ground water contamination, and sustaining drinkable water in the future.
