Physicians can help prevent burns by regularly participating in health promotion programs that stress fire and burn prevention education. The physician is in a uniquely advantageous position to recognize unsafe practices in the home and to help families develop safe living habits, while remaining culturally sensitive to the needs of the patient. The physician must also recognize the importance of promoting safety legislation as an essential component of effective burn prevention, and support such legislation on a local level.
