Rheumatoid arthritis commonly affects the upper limb and causes disabling functional problems. Although hand deformities are more obvious, the proximally involved joints such as the wrist and the elbow require treatments first to provide a stable platform for subsequent hand reconstruction, This chapter will review surgical reconstruction of osseous deformities at the radiocarpal, midcarpal, and distal radioulnar joints (DRUJ), providing recommendations based on the best evidence available. Procedures reviewed include limited and total wrist arthrodesis, arthroplasty, and procedures of the DRUJ that include the distal ulna resection (Darrach), arthrodesis (Suave-Kapandji) and implant arthroplasty. © 2012 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.
