Pediatric genitourinary disorders
Pediatric urology encompasses a wide spectrum of genitourinary disorders ranging from minor birth defects to life-threatening malignancies. An understanding of the embryology of the urinary and genital tracts, as well as functional development of processes such as bladder control and sexual maturation are important for proper management. Much of the focus of the urinary aspects is to protect and maximize renal function during childhood development in those with embryologic, infectious, and obstructive insults, to minimize infections, and to develop continence. Acquired problems such as malignancy and trauma are less common. Management of genital abnormalities and injuries aims to ensure proper sexual development, function, and fertility. Optimal pediatric urologic care requires an interplay of patient/family/provider teaching, medical therapy, surgical intervention, and collaboration with other medical and surgical specialists.
