The role of digital platforms in societal information flows has been the subject of increasing concern and controversy in recent years. As services like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and TikTok reach ever more broadly across societies and burrow ever more deeply into individuals’ daily lives, their potential negative effects on the quality of information flowing to citizens have become increasingly vivid and concerning. Several recent and infamous examples illustrate those concerns.
