Child physical health depends on a multitude of factors- genetics, environment, and access to adequate resources including access to education, preventative health care, and, for some children, subspecialty care. Infant and early childhood development, growth, and health set the stage for later health as an adolescent and adult. This chapter, an introduction to the Section of Child Physical Health, includes an overview of the subsequent chapters that detail conditions, both on an individual and societal level, that impact the health of children. This Section includes important conditions that are both rare and common in addition to the cornerstones of healthy growth and development, thanks to the expertise of the contributing authors.
