Surgical Technique: Bone Graft for Avascular Necrosis of the Hip
Avascular necrosis of the hip is a debilitating disease process that results from a compromise of blood supply to the femoral head. The progression of this disease has been extensively studied, yet improper treatment and failed recognition of the disease can lead to end-stage hip degeneration and eventual total hip arthroplasty. Majority of those who suffer from avascular necrosis belong to a younger demographic, and their desire to continue living an active life raises the need for salvage treatment options. Early recognition allows for salvage treatment options that may delay joint degeneration. Treatment options can range from conservative physical therapy to the much more involved surgical intervention. Herewe offer an approach to properly diagnose avascular necrosis followed by a comprehensive analysis of core decompression with bone grafting. This intervention is an effective treatment strategy for improving joint function and reducing patient pain and can ultimately be employed to delay the need for total hip arthroplasty.
