Application of short-cut nitrogen removal strategies at treatment plants that are required to meet very low total nitrogen limits has driven the need for development of polishing technologies that achieve simultaneous removal of ammonium and nitrate from wastewater. As denitrification filters are often implemented as the final step to reach low total nitrogen limits, development of a partial denitrification - anammox (PdN-AnAOB) biofiltration strategy would allow stringent nitrogen limits to be met while minimizing the use of external carbon for denitrification. Sludge retention time conditions in PdN-AnAOB filters are dependent on the media type and the capacity of the attached biofilm to withstand the shear conditions created during backwashing. The objective of this study was to propose a set of viable media types for PdN-AnAOB filters based on AnAOB enrichment ability, shear resistance of attached AnAOB, and head loss buildup. Results indicated that media sizes less than 2 mm were not suitable for PdN-AnAOB filter application due to rapid head loss buildup and the need for frequent backwash cycles. The results also showed that ceralite (expanded clay) in a size range of 3-5 mm could be a suitable alternative that combined shear resistance and low need for backwashing.
