The role of contact lenses in the management of ocular surface disease in children
Contact lenses, including soft bandage contact lenses and scleral lenses, are typically an underutilized modality for the management of ocular surface disease in the pediatric population. This is frequently due to a perception of significant obstacles to implementation and understandable preference to exhaust options that may have less complexity to initiation. All parties involved, including the child, the caregiver(s) as well as the clinical staff must actively participate in the process to address any challenges that can present throughout the examination, treatment and follow-up course, which can often take significant time and dedication. With the proper strategy and clinical support, these treatment options can be successful and can play a vital role in the resolution of significant acute and chronic pediatric ocular surface disease pathology.
