Neuroimaging has transformed our understanding of the neurobiological substrates of mental disorders by revealing images of the brain in living individuals. In this article, we first summarize neuroimaging studies that have revealed differences in brain structure and function in select classes of mental disorders: neurodegenerative, psychotic, mood, and anxiety and related disorders. We then describe how researchers and clinicians use neuroimaging to diagnose mental disorders, track their progression, and identify targets for therapeutics. We conclude by discussing methods that can be used to address concerns about inconsistent results across studies and whether neuroimaging can reveal causal mechanisms of mental disorders.
