This is a time of simultaneous urgency, promise, and injustice for sexual and gender minorities worldwide. Globally, LGBTQ populations face an HIV/AIDS epidemic among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women, higher prevalence of substance use and mental health disorders, and interpersonal violence. The granting of legal rights to LGBTQ individuals in certain countries has paved the way for improved access to health care. However, for others, access to quality health care-along with other basic human rights-remains severely limited. Many LGBTQ individuals live in societies where their relationships or certain sexual activities are criminalized and where they must suppress their identities as a matter of personal safety.
