Understanding US resettlement processes and care of refugees and other forced migrant populations is an important part of integrated primary care. Individuals and families who have immigrated to the US because of forced migration face significant challenges, often without safety nets, and are particularly vulnerable to poverty and underemployment, social isolation, and ongoing mental health challenges, as well as infectious and chronic diseases that have been undiagnosed or undertreated. Caring for refugee patients can be a rewarding aspect of primary care practice.
