Las Cadenas Globales de Valor en el Cono Sur y Asia-Pacífico
Latin America’s participation in Global Value Chains (GVC) is heterogeneous. In particular, the Southern Cone countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay) have focused on supplying natural resources to international markets, specifically to Asia-Pacific. For the past two decades, international trade between Latin America and Asia-Pacific has shown strong growth rates. In this context, there is currently interdependence and complementarity between these regions, which are inserted in a large number of GVCs. In general, the Southern Cone countries are suppliers of raw materials and participate in the initial stages of the chains, while the Asia-Pacific economies concentrate on manufacturing or intermediate stages of the chain. Trade relations between the two regions have been growing stronger, and this trend is expected to intensify in the coming decades. The purpose of this chapter is to analyze how Southern Cone has inserted itself into the GVCs and its trade relationship with Asia-Pacific.
