Maxillomandibular fixation (MMF) is critical to successful reconstruction and rehabilitation in craniomaxillo-facial trauma and pathology. Indications for MMF include reduction of facial fractures in conjunction with internal fixation. Local or regional anesthesia combined with intravenous sedation may allow for safe and effective treatment. Emesis is a primary concern for patients and healthcare providers, particularly in the immediate postoperative period. Hospital dieticians and case managers can help identify and provide good sources of liquid nutrition. Orthodontic wax can be provided to cover MMF hardware to minimize mucosal trauma. Loosening of the arch bar framework and wire loops can compromise postoperative MMF, and adjustments in the clinic may not be well tolerated by patients.
