Meningiomas are fascinating and important benign tumors of the coverings of the brain whose understanding and management are changing significantly. New knowledge of their biology helps to explain the role of sex hormones, growth factors, radiation, and chromosomal alterations in their pathogenesis. It has been shown that surgery can be performed safely in the elderly patients in whom these tumors typically occur, and that the degree of surgical resection correlates with the risk of recurrence. Focused radiation has been recognized as an important adjunct to surgery. Ongoing research ensures that the understanding of this tumor and its treatment will continue to increase.
