Knowledge of embryology is essential to understanding the syndromes affecting the head and neck. Many congenital syndromes are associated with hearing loss, making otologic evaluation and amplification important. Coexistent syndromic conditions often make the prognosis for the patient more complicated, e.g., adenotonsillectomy may be less successful in treating syndromic children with sleep-disordered breathing/obstructive sleep apnea.
