Women in the news: A us-arab gulf comparison
González offers an analysis of the cultural constraints in both Western and Middle Eastern contexts which have shaped the various realities and challenges for women pioneers in media. In this contribution, the author catalogues women’s entries into the United States news media from the early twentieth century to the present and compares it with Arab Gulf women’s entries into news media. Particular attention is paid to the information and social issues brought to the forefront by women’s increasing participation as reporters and producers of media. The chapter aims to underline that scholars can begin to appreciate the commonalities in both challenges and opportunities created by women’s participation as reporters and producers of news media across the globe.
