During my time in training with Dr. Krackow, he always emphasized the steps taken to cement the implants into place. He was very meticulous and deliberate in this step, and it was never taken for granted or assumed to be unimportant. As we have seen improvements in polyethylene and a decrease in wear, aseptic loosening continues to be one of the top three reasons for early and late failure. This chapter aims to alert surgeons to the pearls and pitfalls during this step of a primary total knee arthroplasty and the need for a standardized approach to ensure the greatest possible longevity of the implant cement-bone interface.
