Heating of trapped ions from the quantum ground state

In this study, heating from the ground state of trapped ions in different traps was measured. The magnitude of heating rates and the results of the size-scaling measurements were inconsistent with thermal electronic noise as the source of the heating. Overall, the results do not indicate any strong dependence on trap-electrode material or on the type of trap potential.
