The preoperative planning and assessment of the patient is very important. As discussed in questions 39 and 40, it is important to understand the indications for the surgery and educate the patient about the condition of the knee joint, the malalignment, and overload in addition to the concurrent instability. Patients need to be clear on the procedure that is being performed and that the rehabilitation and weight bearing will depend on the healing of the high tibial osteotomy. Because of the concurrent anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, it will be important to begin early range of motion to prevent stiffness in the knee joint.
