Since the advent of arthroscopy, orthopedic surgeons have successfully performed increasingly complex procedures through minimally invasive techniques. Initial knee and shoulder arthroscopy focused on purely diagnostic visualization followed by open procedures to treat the pathology. As surgeons improved their skills, these limited diagnostic procedures began to be modified to treat the underlying pathology through the smaller arthroscopic portals. Over the last 25 years, surgical stabilization of knee and shoulder instability has successfully evolved from large open procedures to small arthroscopic techniques. Foot and ankle surgeons are currently experiencing the same phenomenon in regard to ankle arthroscopy.
