This chapter explores how the concept of adaptive governance has evolved since it first emerged in the 1990s. Three branches on the adaptive governance tree are explored - socio-ecological, institutional, and the policy sciences approach. The chapter provides an overview of the differences between adaptive governance and adaptive management, which are often conflated, profiles the different versions of adaptive governance, and details how adaptive governance has been applied in different case studies.
